Flying Cars !! How Will it Work ?

Sitting amidst a sea of cars in bumper-to-bumper traffic on an endless expressway, have you ever daydreamed about your car taking off and flying over the road? Imagine if you could just flip a switch and unshackle yourself from the asphalt!

Traffic jams are the bane of any commuter. Many of us spend an hour or so stuck in traffic every week. The growing population is partly to blame for our congested roads, but the main problem is that we are not expanding our transportation systems fast enough to meet ever increasing demands.

One solution is to create a new type of transportation that doesn't rely on roads, which could one day make traffic jams a 20th century relic. To do this, we must look to the sky.

EARLY EXPERIMENTS

Glenn Curtiss, the Wrights' chief rival, was the first to design a flying car. The first flying car to actually fly was built by Waterman. Waterman became associated with Curtiss while Curtiss was pioneering naval aviation at North Island on San Diego Bay in the 1910s. However, it wasn't until March 21, 1937 that Waterman's Aerobile first took to the air.

The Aerobile was a development of Waterman's tailless aircraft, the Whatsit. It had a wingspan of 38 feet (11 m) and a length of 20 feet 6 inches (6.25 m). On the ground and in the air it was powered by a Studebaker engine. It could fly at 112 mph (180 km/h) and drive at 56 mph (90 km/h).

In 1926, Henry Ford displayed an experimental single-seat aeroplane that he called the "sky flivver". The project was abandoned two years later when a test flight crashed, killing the pilot.

There are nearly 80 patents on file at the United States Patent and Trademark Office for various kinds of flying cars. Some of these have actually flown. Most have not. And all have come up short of reaching the goal of the mass-produced flying car.

MODERN FLYING CARS

There is no lack of engineers taking on the challenge to design a new breed of flying cars. While sleeker, more advanced cars have been developed in the last decade, no one has come close to opening up a flying car dealership. Here are a few of the individuals attempting to deliver a flying car:

Paul Moller has spent 40 years and millions of dollars developing his Skycar. He is now very close to developing the first mass-marketed flying car. In 1965, he demonstrated his first attempt, the XM-2, which hovered off the ground but didn't go anywhere. In 1989, Moller unveiled the M200X, which has now flown 200 flights and can go as high as 50 feet (15.24 meters).

MACRO Industries in Huntsville, Ala., is developing a flying car that it's calling the SkyRider X2R. This aero car will be able to take off and land vertically. SkyRider incorporates the interior design of a 2-seat sports car with the mobility of a helicopter or airplane. The company said it is also developing 5 and 7-seat models of the SkyRider, and it should fit in most two-car garages. The navigation system will be controlled almost entirely by GPS satellites and cellular services.

In Israel, Dr. Rafi Yoeli of Urban Aeronautics is testing the CityHawk, a prototype of a fly-by-wire car. He's also working on a project centered around the X-Hawk, a rotorless Verticle-Take-Off and Landing vehicle (VTOL). Visit this Web site for more information.

In 1990, Kenneth Wernicke formed Sky Technologies to develop a small-winged flying car. His Aircar has flown at 200 to 400 mph (322 to 644 kph) and driven at 65 mph (105 kph). It's also small enough to fit into an average parking space.

Recently, Branko Sarh, a senior engineer at McDonnell Douglas Aerospace, has attempted to develop a flying car, called the Sokol A400, or Advanced Flying Automobile. Sarh designed a 4-passenger vehicle that would pop out telescoping wings at the push of a button.

SKYCAR

Moller's latest design, the Skycar M400, is designed to take off and land vertically, like a Harrier Jet, in small spaces. It can reach speeds of 400 mph (644 kph), but will cruise at around 350 mph (563 kph), and it has a range of 900 miles (1449 km).

Gasoline, diesel, alcohol, kerosene and propane can be used to fuel the Skycar, and its fuel mileage will be comparable to that of a medium-sized car, getting 20 miles (32.2 km) to the gallon. The initial cost of a Skycar will be about $1 million, but once it begins to be mass produced that price could come down to as low as $60,000.

The four-seat Skycar is powered by eight rotary engines that are housed inside four metal housings, called nacelles, on the side of the vehicle. There are two engines in each nacelle so that if one of the engines in one of the nacelle fails, the other engine can sustain flight. The engines lift the craft with 720 horsepower, and then thrust the craft forward.

SUMMARY

The mass availability of flying cars could be very exciting or very scary, depending on how you look at it. If proper safeguards are put in place, they could be the answer to our ever-worsening traffic jams. Flying cars that can travel at hundreds of miles per hour would not only cut that rush hour commute to a few minutes, but it would allow us to live hundreds of miles farther from work and still make it to the office faster than by road-bound cars today.

January : Expect Price Raise

Car lovers and potential buyers celebrating the recent price cuts after the government slashed central value added tax 4% last week, may be in for a jolt.

Car makers said they are planning to raise prices 2 to 3 per cent in January, almost neutralizing the December cuts. The move is to improve margins and, in for cars with high import content, to cover the cost of a weakening rupee against the dollar.

Some analysts, however, suggest that car-makers threaten price rises every January in a bid to clear calendar year-end inventory.

Auto industry estimates price raise of at least 31 models -- from compact cars to premium sedans and sports utility vehicles from Maruti Suzuki, Toyota Kirloskar, Honda Siel Cars, General Motors India and Ford India -- will rise.

Chevrolet, the brand through which troubled US auto giant General Motors operates in India, said it will raise prices Rs 7,000 to Rs 57,000 across models. Honda Siel Cars India plans to raise prices of models like City, Civic, CR-V and Accord significantly. Up to 75 per cent of components for the Accord premium sedan and about 50 per cent for other models are imported.

The weaker rupee is also likely to see prices of Toyota models like the Corolla Altis, Innova, Camry and Prado go up between Rs 20,000 and Rs 30,000. Most car makers say their decisions are driven by the weaker rupee.

Lets see what the next year holds for the common man!

Veritas - The Story Behind

Veritas was a famous West German post World War II sports and race car company, located at Hausen am Andelsbach, near Sigmaringen, Baden-Württemberg, later at Meßkirch and Muggensturm and moved finally to the Nürburgring.

In 1946, after a failed plan by a British BMW licensee to continue production by bringing the brains of BMW to England, several employees left BMW to form their own company named "Veritas" - Latin for "truth."

Since Veritas was formed and headed by Ernst Loof, the chief of racing operations at BMW, it was a racing-oriented company. The first cars that were produced in 1947 were single-seat Formula 2 racers and competition sports cars. These cars were powered by modified 328 engines, scavenged from any place they could be found.

The first car was used in 1947 by its owner Karl Kling to win at Hockenheim and subsequently become the 1947 German 2-litre champion. After only a few cars were made, following an objection from BMW, the cars became simply known as Veritas.

The first Veritas to be made for normal road use was made in 1949 with the launch of the Komet coupé which was little more than a racing Veritas RS made street legal. It was followed by the more civilized 2+2 Saturn coupé and Scorpion cabriolet.

The company moved to larger premises in Muggensturm in 1949 but were badly under capitalized. New cars were designed using a 1998 cc engine. Over 200 orders were received for the new car but there was not enough money available to buy the components and production came to a halt in 1950 and the company continued in operation until 1952 by making new bodies for Panhard cars.

Ernst Loof moved to the Nürburgring in 1950 and set up a new company Automobilwerke Ernst Loof GmbH and started a new range of Veritas cars. But, money quickly ran out and the final bodies were fitted with Ford or Opel engines. The number of cars made at the Nürburgring is estimated as between 6 and 20.

Although it had several prosperous years of racing in the German Formula 2 races, the Veritas failed in international events when it could not catch newer Ferrari and Maserati racers with their 180-horsepower engines.

11 Tips To Increase Longevity Of Your Car

In view of the present market, soaring of fuel prices along with your dream car getting more expensive by the day, is nothing unusual. So, you may want to get the most out of your beloved car while keeping its running and repair costs to the minimum.

You don’t have to be an auto expert to achieve that milestone. Instead, you need to learn few useful tips. So, here are some tips to increase your car’s longevity for a smooth ride ahead.

Choose the best
Firstly, while buying car one must always choose a model of good make. You must not compromise on this and purchase the best you can afford(To know more about tips on buying new car, click here).

Gentle start
Start up your car properly and drive conservatively. Jackrabbit starts and hard braking do more than wear the obvious parts more quickly, leading to more repairs down the road.

Drive regularly
The second trick is to driving regularly and as much as you can. Not driving your car regularly can be as damaging as driving it too hard and recklessly. If not more, it may weaken the battery of your car.

Minimize clutch usage
Avoid using the clutch as far as possible because holding on the clutch for extended periods or touching the clutch pedal unnecessarily may weaken clutch springs and also wear it prematurely, which is not cheap to replace.

Tyre inflation
Make a habit of checking tyre pressures, whenever you are out on a ride. Under-inflated tyres increase rolling resistance and reduce fuel consumption by up to 10%, besides effecting stability during the drive. Excessive pressure, on the other hand, results in faster wear of treads, giving a hard and bumpy ride.

Keeping your tyres properly inflated, therefore, can increase fuel mileage and help reduce flats caused by uneven tyre wear.

Understand warning lights
Serious damage could also be caused if you don’t pay heed to the warning lights, such as the oil pressure light and charging light. These lights come up when you turn on the ignition and fade away after a few seconds of engine operation. You should sense a problem if either a light doesn’t come on during ignition or doesn’t go away even when the engine is started.

Tune engined
Keeping your engine tuned always helps. Also remove excessive items from the vehicle. Experts say an extra 100 pound in your car could reduce MPG by up to 2%, while piling a lot of luggage on the roof rack can reduce fuel economy by up to 5%.

Idling
Prolonged idling creates excess emissions and wastes fuel. According to a conservative estimate, fuel worth Rs 1,000 crore is wasted every year in Delhi alone by vehicles idling at its 600 traffic signals. Therefore, start the car and immediately drive away.

Regular maintenance
To top it all is regular maintenance, particularly changing the engine oil. Oil and air filters prevent dirt and harmful particles from damaging the engine and should be changed at least twice a year or every 3,000-5,000 km. Also, the engine should maintain the amount of oil it is programmed to receive. Negligence in this aspect will lead to a deteriorating engine performance, resulting in falling mileage.

Servicing on-time
Modern cars, in fact, are believed to be exceptionally well made. In the past decade alone, maintenance intervals for things such as spark plugs, emission and cooling systems have been stretched out to 100,000 miles. Still the need for periodic maintenance hasn’t changed.

Vehicle care
Vehicle maintenance is the most important aspects to its safety, longevity and value. Your owner’s manual lists specific time or mileage intervals between major and minor services. Make sure all these jobs are done in time.

Moreover, in a country such as India driving conditions are poor in rural and Sub-urban areas, which lead to a fast wear and tear of your vehicle. This can be prevented only by proper maintenance. A well maintained vehicle will not desert you when you need it most!

Honda exits F1 !!

Honda pulled out of Formula One on Friday, dealing a major blow to the sport and ending a dream for Japan's number two car maker.

Amid slumping car sales triggered by the global economic crisis Honda were no longer willing to invest in the Formula One team with an estimated annual budget of $500 million. Return of Honda to the sport could take time and that there are no plans to continue as an engine supplier.

The Japanese manufacturer CEO said that the 2008 season will be last one for Honda in Formula One. Honda has been racing in Formula One since 2000, initially collaborating with BAR for developing the race cars. In 2006 the company switched and started developing the race cars on its own and racing with a 100% Honda owned team. In the same year Honda managed to get a Grand Prix victory.

Honda also announced that it considers selling the Honda Racing F1 Team and its engine supplier, Honda Racing Development. The market depression is showing its colors all over the place. There are more surprises ahead, if the market fall continues.

Rolling to Google PR3 : My Ride (Part II)

Hello friends,

I am back with the second part of my journey to Google PR3. For those who didn’t read the first part, here it is: Part-I.

This post would be longer than usual because I don't want to leave anything untouched. It consists of almost everything you need to do while you are in the initial 3 months of your blogging career. So, do read till the end or you may miss out on some!

As a newbie you need to learn a lot and work hard. These initial months won’t be returning anything to you. They are foundation for your blog. So let’s start and know what we need to do during these 3 months.

Content:
You may have heard it many a times – content is king. Unfortunately this is the fact. You can’t ignore the content of your blog. It has to be good and in accordance with your niche. Expressionless content are not read much and you loose on your bouncing visitors. So, try posting quality contents.

Commenting:
I am not surprised by the fact that Part-I of this post series received just a couple of comments. Almost 90% of the people avoid sharing and commenting on blogs. Visitors hesitate in commenting. My experience with commenting was so-so. I used to comment on 10 different blogs daily and received back just 1 or 2. Well, it’s not useless, rather I would advice commenting as it is the first step of socializing and drawing traffic. From now on whenever you read a post, drop a comment as per 'your thoughts' avoiding use of phrases like “nice post”, etc.

Blog post layout:
This is something related to your post structure. From the very beginning, try to maintain a definite structure of posting. For example whenever I post a blog I write in paragraphs and include the concerned car pictures. I break up my paragraphs on basis of the car’s specifications and features. The point I want to make is that maintaining a format for your blog posts makes it more readable and also give it a brand.

One more thing to remember is your frequency of posting. Keep it at least once in 3 days and not more than 2 in a single day. This will keep your blog active and also let your posts live for sometime on your blog.

Ping your post:
Whenever you publish a post, a ping is sent to all the directories and search engines to which you have registered. This is not always the case. To manually ping the directories and other social media, use the following web services:
Ping-o-matic
Ping goat

Avoid ads
I am not against earning through blogging. But for the initial 3 months your earning would be negligible. I earned $0.9 in the first 3 months! So concentrate more on your blog and put aside earning for future when your blog is worth generating good revenue.

Review post before publishing:
Always review your blog before making it public. Errors are part of human tendency. So a preview of your blog would prevent those errors from getting public. Do the necessary changes and after satisfying yourself “as a reader” publish the post.

Categorize:
Making categories or applying labels to your blog posts is helpful for both the owner and the readers. Be genuine in creating categories according to your niche. Avoid including a single post in too many categories when you have less number of posts.

Add useful widgets to your blog:
You type “blog widgets” on Google and it populates you with numerous tools for your blog. All of these are not meant for your blog. Every blog must have the following widgets: popular posts, recent comments, top commenters and recent posts. You can find a list of useful widgets here: useful widgets.

Analyze blog stats:
In the initial 3 months they won’t be of much use as your blog will be drawing limited traffic. But they are of great help as your blog grows and gains the tempo. Some of the tools available for analyzing blog are:
Google webmaster
Google analyzer
Sitemeter

Driving traffic:
There are many ways of drawing traffic to your blog. But for the initial 3 months, you need to get yourself registered all over the places. I have listed the places where you need to get your blog listed. Here it goes:

Register to blog directories: list of blog directories
Search engines indexing: Google, Yahoo and Msn.
Getting social: there are a lot many but registering to Blog Catalog and MyBlogLog is a must.
Other social media: entrecard and twitter.
Link exchange: add your blog to technorati, Qassia and add Blog Roll on your blog.
Commenting: comment on other blogs and reciprocate to those who comment on you.
Sponsor contests: another great way of drawing traffic and getting backlinks.

Build relation:
Blog is not all about getting registered and then writing and earning. Socializing plays a major role in making your blog famous and provides you that extra edge over others. Make good relations with other senior bloggers as well as helping and guiding the newbie. It will not only make a reputation for you but also flourish your growth. There are long range benefits of building sound online relations.

Have fun!
Don’t blog just to earn. Keep the blogging spirit alive and post what you like (under your niche). Don’t loose hope and keep up the hard work. The initial 3 months are crucial and you need to just go along regardless of the outcome. Have fun blogging.

Phoooo!!! … long one and a sigh of relief that I wrote down what all I knew. The initial months are as long as this post, but you need to read it all to get the desired! I won’t insist on commenting but if you have something to add or suggest you are most welcome.
